Abstract:

Venezuela’s El Sistema network and Sistema-inspired programmes around the world have captured the public imagination, as well as that of music educators and social policy makers. El Sistema, Venezuela’s national system of youth orchestras and choirs, uses music education to foster positive changes in health and well-being amongst children, their families, and the wider community. Sistema-inspired programmes have been established in 59 countries. The positive outcomes of this global movement, in terms of personal and social development as well as musical excellence, have been documented through a growing body of formal evaluation and research. This chapter gives a brief history of El Sistema, followed by an outline of the principles and practices that characterize its programmes. Some key findings will be presented, focusing on the impact of El Sistema and Sistema-inspired programmes on public health and well-being. Areas where further research is needed are highlighted.
